Implementing best-practices standards for Responsible Investment

WHAT IS PRI?

The UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) are a set of voluntary best-practice standards for integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in investment decision-making and ownership practices and thereby improving long-term financial returns. The six principles were launched in 2006 by UN Global Compact and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). As of July 2009, it had been signed by over 560 signatories of the world largest institutional investors, asset managers and service providers with a total AUM of 18 trillion US dollars. GES Investment Services was among the first signatories to the PRI.

THE SIX PRINCIPLES

The signatories believe that ESG issues will affect financial performance and that the following commitment to the principles may align investors with broader objectives of society:

1. We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.
2. We will be active owners and incorporate ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices.
3. We will seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities in which we invest.
4. We will promote acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry.
5. We will work together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the Principles.
6. We will each report on our activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.

WHAT IS GES PRI CONSULTING?

GES Investment Services has more than 15 years of experience within Responsible Investment. Through the PRI consulting project, we lead our clients through two phases:

1. A clarification process with a description of the principles and the prerequisites for signing, an assessment of the current client position in relation to the six principles and a GAP analysis of which policies and programmes that have to be implemented before signing PRI.

2. An implementation process with a time schedule, alternative cases of best-practices, training and a communication plan for Responsible Investment strategy, results and progress.
