OMX GES Indexes

A family of sustainability and ethical indexes on the Nordic markets

What is OMX GES Indexes?

GES Investment Services and NASDAQ OMX – the world’s largest exchange company – successively calculate an index family of sustainability and ethical indexes on the Nordic markets. These provide investors with the opportunity of comparing their yield on responsible investment against a regulated benchmark. The first indexes were created in 2004 and successively new ones have been added.

The index family include two Nordic indexes as well as one or more indexes for each country:

  • OMX GES Ethical Nordic Index
  • OMX GES Ethical Denmark Index
  • OMX GES Ethical Finland Index
  • OMX GES Ethical Norway Index
  • OMX GES Ethical Sweden Index
  • OMX GES OMXS30 Ethical Index
  • OMX GES Sustainability Sweden Ethical Index
  • OMX GES Sustainability Nordic Index
  • OMX GES Sustainability Sweden Index

The first five indexes consist of all listed companies in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm, with the exception of those companies that do not comply with the ethical criteria of the analysis models GES Global Ethical Standard and GES Controversial.

The criteria are based upon international guidelines for environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and supports investor considerations to the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). Companies with production or sales of weapons, tobacco, alcohol, pornography or gambling are not included.

The OMX GES OMXS30 Ethical Index and OMX GES Sustainability Sweden Ethical Index are constructed in the same way based on the 30 most traded stocks on the Stockholm exchange, while the latter also applies the analysis model GES Risk Rating which rates companies on their preparedness on ESG issues.

The two last indexes - OMX GES Sustainability Nordic Index and OMX GES Sustainability Sweden Index - are entirely based on such a risk rating without the application of ethical criteria. The Nordic sustainability index comprises the 50 best rated companies on the Nordic exchanges, while the Swedish comprises the 30 best rated on the Stockholm exchange.
