GES Burma Engagement Service
An engagement process for high risk investments in Burma

WHAT IS GES BURMA ENGAGEMENT SERVICE?
The GES Burma Engagement Service is an active ownership process aimed at reducing the risks for companies operating in Burma of becoming involved in violations of human rights while at the same time actively contributing to a positive development within these areas in the country.THE PROCESS
The GES Burma Engagement Service applies a similar process as the well-established service GES Engagement Forum, except for a few adjustments. All companies operating in Burma are put on observation. Companies in industries with the highest risk level – assessed in a Country & Sector Rating – and with the poorest Global Company Rating are singled out for engagement activities.
BASIS FOR ENGAGEMENT DECISION
The further process is based on the OECD Risk Awareness Tool for Multinational Enterprises in Weak Governance Zones. Via Company Dialogue the following key parameters are assessed:• Compliance with international standards
• Contribution to improvement of living conditions for civilians
• Procedures on speaking out about wrongdoing
The findings are probed through Source Dialogue with e.g. official bodies and non-governmental organizations, and finally assembled in a Risk Analysis which clarifies the company’s risks in Burma and establishes the goal for the engagement process.
